Common forbidden food for dogs and cats

Have you noticed the forbidden food for dogs and cats? Alice from CTPET would like to explain which foods are forbidden by dogs and cats.

1. Onion and garlic

Onion poisoning is more common in dogs and cats. Not only can onions and garlic irritate the gastrointestinal tracts of dogs and cats, causing inflammation, and affecting the sense of smell, but also life-threatening pets. Onions and garlic contain the toxic ingredient n-propyl disulfide, which can cause acute hemolytic anemia and damage to the bone marrow after eating in dogs and cats. Experiments have confirmed that if a dog is fed a medium-sized cooked onion or continuously fed cooked food mixed with onion juice, severe anemia will occur on 7 to 10 days. The oral poisoning dose of onion for dogs is 15~20g/kg body weight. Poisoning manifests as weight loss, tiredness, frequent panting, depression, rapid and weak pulse, film-like secretions from the gums and mouth, and can be fatal in severe cases.

3. Grapes and raisins: There are relatively new reports of poisoning by eating grapes or raisins in dogs and cats. The cause of the poisoning is still unclear. It may be that there are special ingredients in grapes that can cause poisoning. Toxic doses vary by pet and have been reported from eating 60 grams to 450 grams of raisins or grapes. Vomiting first, the pet becomes nervous and hyper-responsive, depressed or near coma after 24 hours, the abdomen may be stiff and painful, no appetite, no water, no urine, irregular breathing, and continued symptoms of dehydration. In severe cases, it can cause kidney failure. When kidney failure occurs, symptoms of uremia, mouth ulcers, stomach ulcers, vomiting and vomiting blood, black stools may occur, convulsions, coma, and death.

4. Animal offal:

Do not feed animal offal, especially the liver, to pet dogs and cats for a long time. The liver can affect the absorption of calcium in dogs and cats, resulting in calcium deficiency, rickets, and even paralysis. The liver contains a lot of vitamin A, and excess vitamin A can accumulate in the body, and when the accumulation reaches a certain level, it can cause poisoning in pet dogs and cats. The most typical manifestation is convulsions, which are typical symptoms of severe calcium deficiency in the body. Some dogs and cats also have symptoms such as unstable walking, hair loss, depression, easy fractures, and pica. Studies have shown that the correct ratio of calcium to phosphorus in cat food is approximately 1:1, while there is less calcium and more phosphorus in the liver, and the ratio of calcium and phosphorus in fresh liver reaches 1:36. If cats eat liver for a long time, it will lead to deficiency calcium.

5. Xylitol: Xylitol is used as a sweetener in many foods. It may cause poisoning in pet dogs after eating. The initial manifestations are vomiting, drowsiness, lying down and seizures. The researchers pointed out that it may be because the consumption of xylitol stimulates a large amount of insulin secretion in the body, resulting in a sharp drop in blood sugar, which eventually leads to death. Although further research is needed, it is recommended that breeders do not give xylitol-containing foods to dogs and cats.

8. Raw or undercooked meat and fish

Raw or undercooked meat and fish may contain pathogenic microorganisms such as E. coli and Salmonella that are harmful to pets. Raw fish produces an enzyme that destroys vitamin B1, leaving dogs and cats deficient in vitamin B1, which can lead to cramps, heart disease, and intermittent shock. In addition, feeding raw fish to dogs and cats can cause parasitic infections. Parasite infection in cats can cause systemic jaundice and hepatitis, and liver disease can also lead to liver ascites and kidney disease, which can endanger the pet's life.

Raw egg whites contain a protein called Avidin, which depletes your dog's vitamin H. Vitamin H is an indispensable nutrient for dog growth and for promoting healthy fur.
