Knowledge Sharing About Dog Tear Marks

The dog's tears are produced in the lacrimal gland, then discharged through the tear duct, distributed on the dog's upper eyelid, and then evenly distributed to the surface of the eyeball through the blinking action, so that the eyeball is moisturized. Due to the action of gravity, the excess tears will gradually converge to the inner corner of the dog's eye, pass through the lacrimal canaliculus to the nasolacrimal duct, and then reach the nasal septum for excretion. That is to say, under normal circumstances, a dog's tears slip through the nose. It can be seen from the anatomical diagram that the drainage channel of tears is very small. If there are too many tears or its drainage channel is blocked, the tears will overflow from the eye socket.

一. How is the drainage channel of tears blocked?

1. Abnormal structure

Due to artificial breeding, humans have bred many dogs with prominent eyeballs and short noses, such as Poodles, Bichon Frises, Bullfighting, Chihuahuas, etc. Because of the protruding eyeball, the punctum is often blocked and blocked. Because of the short nose, the structure of the lacrimal canaliculus and nasolacrimal duct is more curved and narrower than other dogs, and some dogs are congenital lacrimal atresia, which causes This kind of dog's tears excretion is not smooth.

2. Inflammation

Inflammation of the surrounding tissue and inflammation of the lacrimal duct caused by foreign bodies falling into the lacrimal duct can cause lacrimal duct stenosis and blockage.

3. Nasal diseases

Because tears eventually need to be discharged through the nasal cavity, if a space-occupying lesion occurs in the nasal cavity, it may compress the nasolacrimal duct and prevent the tears from being discharged normally, such as sinusitis, nasal cavity tumors, fractures, etc.

二. How to Lighten or Eliminate Dog Tear Marks

1. For the cause of tears, first seek the help of a veterinarian to rule out disease factors

2. Dogs with too long hair around the eyes should be trimmed regularly or braided

3. For dogs with abnormal structures, artificial cleaning and maintenance are required. Wipe the corners of the eyes with a wet towel at least twice a day to dilute the concentration of porphyrins in tears. Regular grooming is also required to thoroughly clean the hair around the eyes.

4. For tear marks that have already formed, you can use a boric acid-containing eye cleanser or liquid vitamin C to wipe, because they can oxidize porphyrin and dilute its staining. But parents beware! Volatile and irritating oxidants cannot be used to clean tear stains for dogs, such as hydrogen peroxide, makeup remover, etc.

5. Don't drink mineral water for dogs. The minerals in mineral water will increase the content of porphyrin in tears, which will make the tear stains look more serious. Therefore, it is recommended to give your dog pure water.

6. Use stainless steel, ceramic or glass food bowls for dogs. Food bowls made of these materials are not easy to breed bacteria and reduce the chance of the dog's facial contact with bacteria. If the tear stains are caused by bacterial infection, be sure to take medicine under the guidance of a doctor, do not use antibiotics without authorization

7. There is a view that feeding dogs white meat-based food can reduce tear marks. This is because red meat (including meat from all mammals such as pork, beef, lamb, venison, rabbit, etc.) is high in saturated fat, which increases the burden on the liver, increases the excretion of porphyrins, and makes tear marks more visible. White meat (referring to chicken, duck, fish, shrimp, shellfish, etc.) is low in fat, which is good for removing tear marks.
